Modification proceedings involve changing support, visitation, custody, or alimony when there has been a substantial change in circumstances. Most times, modifications are issued to account for new occurrences in the lives of children or the former spouses.

Simply because a court entered an order granting a certain amount of child support or alimony does not mean that this can not be changed. The law recognizes that events in our lives cause our finances and personal relationships to change. Modification proceedings are designed to account for those changes.

However, not all changes qualify for a modification. It is usually required that there be a substantial change in circumstances, as opposed to a trivial change in circumstances.

For example, if a former spouse's salary increases by a significant amount, then there may be a substantial change in circumstances. However, if the salary increased by only a few dollars, this may not be too substantial.
